abstract = {The purpose of this study was to compare the influ­ence of the different laser irradiation methods on liver regeneration. 40 rabbits were used in this study. Ten animals un­derwent laparotomy only (sham operated group) and 30 animals underwent median hepatectomy which were divided into three groups (10 animals in each group) depending on the postoperative treatment. Control animals received no postoperative treatment, in the local laser group the remnant liver was irradi­ated and in the portal irradiation group the portal blood was irradiated by laser. We used helium-neon laser device, which radiates red light (0,633 ?m) and irra­diations were performed prompt and 24 hours after resection at the dose of 0,5 J/cm2 (at the total dose of 70-80 mj). The animals were sacrificed 48 hours after resection and the mitotic index, liver regeneration rate, lipid peroxidation parameters such as malonic dialdehide, xanthin oxidase, superoxide dismutase, catala­se levels in the liver tissue and the serum transaminase, albumin, bilirubin and prothrombin levels were as­sessed. Both focal and blood laser irradiations was found to increase liver regeneration, and to decrease lipid peroxidation in the liver tissue significantly and to pre­serve liver function in comparison with control and sham operated groups. The blood laser irradiation method appear to increase regeneration and decrease lipid peroxidation more effectively than local laser irradiation. In conclusion, both local and blood laser irradia­tion stimulate liver regeneration and decrease lipid peroxidation in the regenerating liver, whereas the blood laser irradiation methods are seemed more ef­fective than local irradiation.},
